The slopes of Saalbach Hinterglemm and its neighbors Leogang, are known worldwide as the Ski Circus, as they form a perfect rounded circle with linked slopes in all directions. The slopes, though not very difficult, have a lot of variety and generally run through the forest. Looking at the ski area map, the right-hand zone is south facing and, therefore, very sunny. It offers intermediate slopes that connect to a height of 1,400 meters so no need to download every time to the valley to move from one to another of the 5 different ski mountains. From the last mountain, Wildenkarkogel, a series of red runs with good snow lead to the neighboring resort of Leogang. On the ski map left-side, there are two very different mountains, both north-facing and with superb snow conditions. Schattberg is the top of the resort and offers the longest runs, with over 1000 meters of vertical drop. The other mountain Zwölferkogel offers some of the most demanding slopes of all the Ski Circus. Thanks to its modern lifts and the fact that it is not a weekend destination, there are very few queues. It is a low ski area, and half of its tracks are on the south side but there are plenty of snow guns. Actually the Ski-Circus is a pot that accumulates plenty of snow so usually snow conditions are much better than in neighbor resorts. Saalbach is one of the prettiest villages in Austria. Located in a beautiful valley, with the lifts out from the very village center, it has beautiful pedestrian streets with nice hotels, shops and restaurants and a very lively atmosphere. The suburbs are very extensive and are not really so ski in-out. The village stretches while almost touching its neighbor Hinterglemm. (also quite extensive, with a pedestrian centerbut smaller and more family friendly). Hinterglemm´s village center is also walking distance to the lifts, and despite not being as lively, has the advantage of better prices. The small village of Leogang is quite genuine and nice, but also extensive and almost no central core. From one end of the village a gondola connects with Ski Circus slopes. One of the strengths of Saalbach is the wonderful atmosphere of Après Ski enjoyed by visitors. While the ski day comes to an end the bars and restaurants in Saalbach lower slopes are chock-full of customers who begin to play. The atmosphere is special with live music and dancing and drinking with customers with the ski boots still on. From six in the evening the mood shifts to the beautiful pedestrian downtown bars facing the main street. After dinner, it's hard to find a place in pubs that fill people up again. And in the end the audience is moved to one of the many nightclubs until the wee hours of the morning. Hinterglemm is atmospheric but more quite and, actually, there is a bus service until 4 in the morning to know both villages by night. No skiers will find in Saalbach center some shops and restaurants but it´s quickly done. There are not much things to do: 11 km. of cross-country tracks in Hinterglemm, 40 km of marked trails in the snow and toboggan runs are part of the offer for non-skiers. Other options include a swimming pool, indoor squash and tennis. Excursions to the beautiful nearby cities of Kitzbuhel and Salzburg are also organized.
