Zell am See-Kaprun is considered one of the most attractive skiing areas in Austria. Three areas with a total of 138 slope kilometers offer skiing enthusiasts and snowboarders plenty of diversion: 47 kilometers of easy slopes, 59 kilometers of intermediate slopes and 32 kilometers of difficult slopes. In 1965 Austria’s first glacier skiing area was opened at Kitzsteinhorn, which today presents itself as a modern skiing area with international guests and guaranteed year-round fun in the snow. Roughly 41 slope kilometers stretch from the 3,029-meter-high peak to the Langwiedboden at an altitude of 1,978 meters. Three snow parks, Austria’s biggest super pipe, mogul slopes and ski trails invite winter sports enthusiasts to freestyle. And safety has always top priority. In free-ride XXL workshops state-certified guides prepare both beginners and professionals for the fascination of skiing in deep snow and accompany them at the Kitzsteinhorn. On the Schmittenhöhe winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy first class ski fun. The ascent with the world’s first design cable cars from Porsche Design already provides for exclusive pleasure. The consistent network of 26 cable cars and lifts expands to 2,000 meters and connects 77 perfectly primed slope kilometers. On the local mountain of Zell am See, which offers a unique panoramic view to thirty 3,000-meter peaks, skiers as well as free skiers and snowboarders are in their element. In the Rome Park, which offers jumps, rails, boxing and kickers, the scene meets for the ultimate snow fun. The ski movie trail at the Hochmais cable car is a pleasure for everyone. The “personal video film” can be downloaded after the descent at two terminals in the skiing area. The descents at the Maiskogel in Kaprun are tailor-made for families. Seven cable cars and lifts connect roughly 20 kilometers of wide and gentle slopes up to an altitude of 1,730 meters. Those who aim for mileage will be thoroughly satisfied with the descent down the longest slope of the region measuring seven kilometers. Hikers, snowshoe walkers and Nordic walkers experience the wintery nature on silent feet. Cleared paths stretching over roughly 40 kilometers lead through the picturesque mountain landscape of Zell. Those who do not want to experience the mountain region on their own can discover the winter scenery in guided tours, for example in a GPS ski safari or an art hike along the “Höhenpromenade” on the Schmittenhöhe. Tobogganing has always been among the winter classics in Zell am See-Kaprun. It is always fun to dash down the natural coasting slides between Kitzsteinhorn and Schmittenhöhe. The "Alpine Coaster Maisiflitzer" at the Maiskogel is one of the tobogganing highlights. The first year-round roller coaster in the Alps in the Salzburger Land is fun for all generations. Guided securely on tracks the double-seaters speed down the valley on a track of 1,300 meters at a pace of up to 40 kilometers per hour. There is always something going on on the frozen Lake Zell and in the nearby ice rink. Ice skaters do their laps and ice hockey players chase the puck on the glassy surface. Furthermore, the shiny lake is an ideal playground for ice sailors and snow-kiters. In excellent wind conditions they perform unique feats with their colorful, bloated sails. Professionals show jumps that cover up to 200 meters and fly up to 20 meters into the air. Skiers and snowboarders can try the game with the wind themselves under the professional supervision of snow-kite teachers. For those who are looking for a somewhat unconventional winter adventure, Zell am See-Kaprun offers many exciting alternatives. Some organizers, for example, offer hikes through glacier canyons or ski tours on ungroomed trails covered in deep snow.
