The Valais is a Mecca for snow and winter sports fans. Thanks to its geographical location and special climate, it not only boasts 300 sunny days a year but also more snow than anywhere else in Switzerland until spring. Here you are spoilt for choice: skating and cross-country skiing on perfectly prepared trails? Hiking on paths full of winter magic? Sledging fun for all the family? Snow shoe hiking across the glistening white ground? Carving on wide pistes or boarding in totally extreme half-pipes? Whatever you choose, snow and sunshine are almost always included. Some of the most varied ski regions in the Alps await you amidst an enthralling panorama of 46 peaks of 4000 metres or more. Its location high up in the Alps means that perfect conditions are guaranteed until well into spring. It’s not hard to see why the ski regions of the Valais always take the top slots in the European rankings. There are much more ways to enjoy the snowy landscapes than skiing. Plenty of toboggan runs (some of them more than 10 Km. long) guarantee lots of fun. Hundreds of km. of marked winter hiking trails allow you to enjoy the great mountain landscapes. If you prefer to walk on deep snow, you have to try snow-shoe hiking. Faster, but also open to everyone, cross-country skiing is very easy to learn and one of the best ways to do some winter sport and enjoy the mountains. Another way to travel around this mountain paradise is using all the mountain lifts and mountain trains open to tourists such as: Zermatt and Saas-Fee high alpine lifts, Mont-Blanc Express, Gornergrat Bahn and Glacier Express. Wether using tourist trains or the rental car you can not miss the wonderful mountain villages around, nice cities such as Sion and Sierre and neighbouring Geneva, by Lake Geneva. After so much exploring, nothing better than relax in some of the mountain spas, actually there is plenty of thermal water everywhere. End your day tasting typical mountain gastronomy of Valais and its famous alpine wines.
