The following itinerary is a suggestion of excursions and visits you can do while staying in Beitostolen, the mountains above the fjords:
Day 1: Flight to Norway
Check-in at your home airport 90 minutes before the designated departure time of your flight to Oslo. Upon arrival at Oslo Airport pick-up the rental car you will use the whole week. Drive the ca. 200 Km. To Beitostolen Resort where your acommodation is located. Check-in and first night in Norway.
Day 2: The Fjord Mountains.
Today we suggest you to spend the day discovering the highland areas surronding Beitostolen. About 30 km north of your acommodations, in Bygdin, you can take a boat to cruise the main lake of the National Park, with splendid views. You can return by boat or on foot, an easy distance of about 4hrs. South of Beitostolen you can visit the Valdres area (highlights are the wooden church in Heggen or the beautiful Valdres Folk Museum). Night in Beitostolen.
Day 3: The Geiranger Fjord.
Today you can visit the most dramatic of all the fjords. You have to take the road crossing the Valdresflya Mountain Pass until Hol (wooden church and mountain´s museum). From there the route borders the Jostedalsbreen National Park (glaciers) via Stryn to Hellesylt. This is the departure port of an amazing ferry cruise crossing all the fjord till reaching Geiranger. You can come back to Beitsotolen via the famous Dalsnibba mountain road. Today you will drive arounf 340 Km. all in all, so we recommend an early start. Night in Beitostolen.
Day 4: Jotunheimen National Park.
Today you can relax of car driving and spend the day in the nearby Jotunheimen National Park. A short distance from the resort is Gjendesheim, from where departs the boat that sails 18 kilometers inside the heart of the National Park on Lake Gjende. The boat has some stops en-route designated to do some short walks a bit around the area. On your way back we recommend to stop by the Ridderspranget rapids to discover its legend. Night in Beitostolen.
Day 5: The Flam Railway.
Circa 80 km from Beitostolen there is the Gol train station. Here you can board the train that, crossing through the Norwegian Alps, takes you to Myrdal. In Myrdal awaits you the famous Flam Railway, which takes peple to the Sognefjord downloading 1000 height differecen in less than 14 Km. Once in Flam you can tour the Sognefjord by ferry boat before enjoying dramatic landscapes in your train return journey. Night in Beitostolen.
Day 6: Lillehammer, the Olympic city.
Today´s suggestion is driving the fast road to Lillehammer (less than 150 Km.). You can stop en-route to visit Gudbrandsdalen , a beautiful alpine valley. Once in the city enjoy the Maihaugen Folk Museum, showing buildings from all around the country and with plenty of activities of great interest to children and adults. There are also the Olympic venues and the pedestrian street Storgata, among the most beautiful and traditional in whole Norway. Night in Beitostolen.
Day 7: The Wooden Churches & Sognefjord.
We recommend you to visit the stave churches of Lomen, Ore and Hoyen, in the Vang lake area. While enjoying the beautiful lake Vangsmjössa, landscapes you will arrive to Borgund, the most beautiful and spectacular of all the wooden churches of Norway. From there it is a short drive to Ardal, deep into the Sognefjord. You can visit some of the fjord before driving back to the Resort (Ardal is 111 Km away) Night in Beitostolen.
Day 8: Flight back home.
Leave Beitostolen with enough time to reach Oslo Airport around 120 minutes before the designated departure time of your flight. It´s a drive of around 200 Km. Drop-off the rental car and check-in to your flight back home. Arrival and end of the trip.
