St. Anton is the birthplace of modern skiing. Here you will find the oldest and most prestigious ski school in the world as well as the legendary Arlberg Ski Club. But modern skiers need something more than legends and actually was completely rebumped after hosting World Ski Championships. The town was much improved and the lifts were upgraded to most modern and efficient levels. But St. Anton still a pretty Tyrolean village with an extraordinary Après Ski atmosphere with prices not inflated considering what is on offer (actually the atmosphere is much younger than elsewhere in the Arlberg). St. Anton offers a mix of its own because unmatchable possibilities for the expert skier, plenty of snowfalls, a vertical terrain and many, many lift-accesible powder-snow itineraries.
St. Anton slopes are part of the legendary Arlberg, one of the best ski areas in the world. This is a huge resort, well-known for the incomparable quality of its tracks, very high mountains, stunning landscapes and exceptional snow conditions. The Arlberg includees two main areas linked by free ski-bus: St. Anton - St. Christoph and Lech - Zürs. Both areas are defined by wide above the tree-line slopes and many off-piste itineraries.
Across the Arlberg Pass, Zürs and Lech areas have even better, if possible, snow conditions. From Lech, Oberlech is accessed via the main area of slopes. In Krieger Horn's wide tracks are very nice and ideal for families or timid intermediates, while Zug-side gets more complicated. On the opposite side of Lech the Rüfikopf cable cars allow access to Zürs, a linked but different ski area with spectacular itineraries and great slope on both sides of the village. Trittikopf side is more difficult while Seekopf is somewhat quieter though there are spectacular slopes and off-piste itineraries to return to Zug and Lech. All slopes in Lech and Zürs are linked by lifts in a single direction, the full itinerary is known as “Weisse Ring”.
Despite its size, being crowded and highly commercialized, noisy and full of life and atmosphere, St. Anton has preserved its charm and architecture still looking as a typical Tyrolean village. The pedestrianized center is a very nice place to stroll around. The town is quite large, but cable cars depart form the very center. There is plenty of après-ski atmosphere. Starting at 3 pm the bars around the slopes are filled with a crowd eager to party. Later on the crowds move to the bars in the central street. Live Music, DJs, lots of beer and schnapps and people dancing with ski boots keep going on well into the night. The party continues till very late in a dozen of pubs and discos. In contrast, St. Christoph and Stuben are very quiet. There are 65 km of cross country ski tracks and 70 km. of marked trails in the snow. There is also the possibility of trips to Lech or Innsbruck. Pedestrian streets are fine, but seen in half a day. Non-skiers can easily access mountain restaurants Galzig and Rendl by cable-car.
